Vita

Sarah M. Lewis is a cultural producer and currently a PhD candidate in Theater and Performance Studies and a Eugene V. Cota-Robles fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles. Stemming from a position of critically addressing inequitable socio-political/cultural practices she has combined her skills as a performance maker and pedagogue to provide cultural programming that invites and centers underrepresented groups in the arts and in academia. Sarah has researched collaborative art practices as a member of the art collective LEWIS FOREVER (which presented work amongst other places at ps122 and the New Museum in NYC), independently with SOIT in Brussels, Agora and Sophiensaele in Berlin, and worked for several years with the art and science collective Mobile Academy Berlin as a curator, researcher, and project manager.
Her current research explores the material and symbolic resonance of sugar, refined from cane, to interrogate how this “tastemaker” has fed the racial imagination.
